The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 2.7 million General Ameri*550 AS tires, made by Continental Tire North America, over reports of tread separation. NHTSA has received 338 claims of tread separation on the P235/70R16 size tire. The claims include seven crashes, two of them rollovers, that reportedly caused a total of 17 injuries but no deaths. Ford had been using the tires as replacements for Firestones on Ford Explorers after a recall of Firestones last summer, also because of tread separation. Ford also uses is Ameri*550 AS on its F-150 pickup truck.
