John Valovic, 89, of Prospect Heights, a retired engineer, died Sunday, Aug. 19, in Alden Nursing Home in Des Plaines. Born and raised on Chicago’s West Side, Mr. Valovic worked as a stationary engineer at various Chicago dairies, including the Pure Milk Association and Hawthorn Dairy, both in Chicago, from the 1930s through the early 1960s. Mr. Valovic retired in 1962, and he and his wife, Marian, moved to Prospect Heights in 1978. A skilled carpenter who built everything from desks to sleds for his family, Mr. Valovic was never idle, said his daughter-in-law, Jean. “He was always building or repairing something,” she said. “He could fix anything.” Other survivors include a son, Donald; a sister, Ann Wolford; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd., Mt. Prospect.
