With the death of Dr. George Teuscher (“Pioneer in children’s dentistry, NU dean,” Obituaries, Aug. 26), Chicago not only lost a leader of the dental community but a champion of social rights.

I graduated from Northwestern Dental School in 1959.

For many years, the dental school had been having its annual dinner dance at the then Lake Shore Club, which at that time was “restricted” as to who could enter its doors. When Dr. Teuscher became aware of this situation, he issued the ultimatum that all NUDS students could participate or the school would no longer hold its affairs there.

From that time on, all students in the school could enter this club for school events.

Because of the influence or Dr. Teuscher and of Dr. Norman Olson, I continued my education and entered the field of pediatric dentistry.
