I want to congratulate Salim Muwakkil on “How will future generations view Israeli occupation?” (Commentary, Aug. 27).
Mr. Muwakkil has shown courage seldom found among American opinion-makers when the subject matter pertains to Israel and its occupation of Palestinian lands.
I contrast Mr. Muwakkil’s opposition to Israeli occupation to opinions held and published by the likes of syndicated columnists Charles Krauthammer and George Will.
These two journalists are examples of how a double standard is often tolerated by the American media in the way they treated Slobodan Milosevic’s occupation of Kosovo, for example, compared to their treatment of Israel’s harsh occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.
America’s appeal to people around the globe is its upholding of a higher moral standard than those of most other countries.
For its government and the majority of its pro-Israeli media to support Israeli occupation is a betrayal of that standard.
Occupation is occupation regardless of the occupying power. Mr. Muwakkil has the courage to call it as it is.
I applaud him.
