Waverly E. Schuning, 68, of Big Rock, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Provena Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora, after suffering a heart attack. Born in Plano, Mr. Schuning had his first job at age 9 when he was a paperboy. As a teenager, he was employed at the Plano Bowling Alley setting pins. In his youth he loved roller skating, ice skating, swimming and dancing. He went on to serve with the Army was stationed in France. A carpenter by trade, Mr. Schuning was affiliated with the Carpenters Union Local 916 prior to his retirement in 1993. Later, he worked for the Fox Valley Shopping News. He loved to golf with his grandkids, and afterwards would cook for them. He also enjoyed making things for his family, from furniture to wooden trinkets. He was a member of American Legion Post 489. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Dolores; two sons, Matthew and Eric; two brothers, Dan and Robert; four sisters, Maxine Rogers, June Barlage, Mary Lou Assell, and Linda Sickles; two grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove.
