The Cubs must improve the quality of the seventh-inning guest singers of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” On Saturday, Aug. 25, they had Bill O’Reilly from Fox TV, and his banter with Pat Hughes and Ron Santo was disgusting. When asked what was new in his business, he replied with how sick he was of the Gary Condit story–he brings the story up, I guess, to demonstrate how tired of it he was–and then acts as judge, jury and executioner with his quotation, “I’ve got three words for Gary Condit: tarred and feathered.”
He also seemed to dwell on the political leanings of Susan Sarandon in remarking that “you couldn’t get a date with her unless you agreed with her politically.” I guess he failed to notice the fact she is a married mom.
O’Reilly is a very successful “pundit” who, acid-tongued and judgmental in his commentary, doesn’t deserve any more air time, especially in what is known as the national pastime. Guys like O’Reilly detract from the excellence of Cubs broadcasts with Pat Hughes and Ron Santo and stain the game of baseball.
