Some Wyoming, Mich., officials believe a lake in this Grand Rapids suburb could be a more popular recreation spot if it weren’t for one little blemish–its name, which is Pimple Lake.
So after several meetings with focus groups, a poll of town employees and the flip of a coin, it was decided to rename the body of water Pustule Lake. No, just kidding.
Actually, Wyoming residents soon will be asked if they’d like Pimple Lake to be renamed Gypsum Lake.
Local historians say the 50-acre body of water got its unusual name years ago from farmers who often referred to it as “that little pimple of a lake.” It sits beside a city-operated water-treatment plant.
Joe Stapf, the city’s utilities director, said plant employees suggested the new name in recognition of the area’s history of gypsum mining. He plans to include a survey card in city water bills to ask residents what they think of the proposal.
“If [they] don’t like this one, we’ll go back to the drawing board,” he said.
