More than 10,000 Washington Wizards season ticket-holders, who placed $500 non-refundable deposits on seats that cost as much as $4,200 each, must decide by Tuesday whether to complete payments on their seats.

But Michael Jordan, whose prospective return to the NBA contributed to a surge in the deposits, won’t announce whether he will play for the team until mid-September.

“We have never tied our renewal efforts to a Jordan comeback,” a team spokesman said. “Anyone who buys a season ticket based on that is definitely rolling the dice.”

Maier still hazy

Star skier Hermann Maier can’t remember details of the motorcycle accident 10 days ago that left him with a broken leg and put his career in jeopardy. He is being treated at a hospital in Austria.

“The first thing I can remember is waking up in surgery in Radstadt,” said Maier, who appeared shaken and tired in his first interview, with Austrian national TV, his voice quavering.

“The most important thing is that I am on the road to recovery and that I am alive.”
