Raymond E. McGrath, born in Chicago, Illinois in 1915. Grew up in Oak Park. Graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1937. Served in the U.S. Army in WW II, rising to the rank of captain. Married Madeleine Shannon in 1943. They had eight children – Madeleine, John, Jay, Raymond Michael, Mary, Roch, Sarah, and Matthew, all of whom survived him. He has nine grandchildren: of the McGraths: Mahon, Keri, Liam, Sean, Brendan, Jared and Casey; of the Gallaghers, Michael and Erin. Three years after the death of his wife, Madeleine, married Lilias Fraser Milne. He was also the stepfather of Graham MacLean and Dana MacLean Uchima, and the stepgrandfather of Polly MacLean Culpepper. He is survived by his sister, Ruth O’Keefe, of Oak Brook, Illinois. In business, was Chairman of the Board of Premier Engraving Co. of Chicago, a major supplier of photoengravings to advertising agencies in the U.S. Premier was a major engraver for the Sears Roebuck catalog for over 50 years.Mr. McGrath was a talented pitcher in the armed forces baseball leagues in WW II, at a time when amateurs and professionals alike played on service teams. He was an avid lifelong golfer until well into his eighties, using a wood-shaft putter he had been given in grammar school. He was a member of Notre Dame Church and Long Beach Country Club. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 8, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 1010 Moore Road, Long Beach, Indiana.
