Personal finance courses with subjects ranging from financial independence to bolstering portfolios are being offered by Elgin Community College’s Center for Lifelong Learning.
“All of our instructors are financial planners, and they’re not here to sell their business,” said Donna Newberg, course developer at the center. All of the instructors are volunteers, Newberg said.
One of them, Lynn Schmidt, president of Meritus Financial Group in Elgin, said, “I believe very strongly that the mismanagement of financial issues causes a lot of problems in peoples lives and I don’t think financial services should be just for the wealthy.”
