The top-ranked Mother McAuley volleyball team didn’t believe they could just roll past Sandburg on Wednesday night.

Behind Maddie Barron’s five kills and Katie Kozak’s 15 assists, the Mighty Macs cruised to a surprisingly easy 15-3, 15-5 victory over the Eagles.

Mother McAuley (4-0) ended whatever hopes Sandburg had by running off five straight points to take a commanding 7-1 lead in Game 1. They also opened Game 2 with a 7-2 run.

“I thought we looked pretty smooth out there,” Mother McAuley coach Nancy Pedersen said. “I think Sandburg would admit to being somewhat inconsistent. There were times where they could have stolen the momentum but where unable to sustain it. They helped us out a few times.”
