I am more deeply troubled about the press coverage of the U.S. and Israeli withdrawal from the World Conference Against Racism than I am about the withdrawal itself. Politics is politics, after all. But the press, especially the U.S. press, is not reporting on this fairly.
There is a paragraph that was provisionally added to a draft document that expresses concern over the “racist practices” in Israel. In the same paragraph, it condemns the persecution of Jews around the world. There are pages upon pages of condemnation of particular racial problems around the globe. Why isn’t anything said about that? Perhaps our leaders are worried that the conference may have something to say to us and our “friends.”
