I’m writing today in praise of Chicago Tribune writer Steve Chapman’s column on polygamy. It’s refreshing to see some rational thought on the issue of polygamy instead of reactionary moral judgments being slung around, and maybe it’s not surprising to see it come from someone in the Midwest instead of the South. Here in the buckle of the Bible Belt, I grow weary of seeing our “moral minority” dominate the editorial columns. I fear an article on the subject of polygamy might have had a much different ring to it if it were written by someone regionally.

Thanks to Chapman for his ability to see that people have certain inalienable rights when it comes to the subject of whom they choose to cohabit with and whom they wish to have sexual relations with. I have no doubt you’ll receive many letters of complaint from Dallas’ churchgoing fare, who believe you can and should legislate morality to the tune of violating every citizen’s civil rights and throwing the Constitution out the door.
