A week-old boy was found abandoned outside a South Side apartment door early Friday.
The newborn was found at 1:33 a.m. in the 7400 block of South South Shore Drive, police said.
The baby, taken to University of Chicago Children’s Hospital, “appeared healthy” and was released in good condition to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, said hospital spokesman John Easton. DCFS has temporary custody of the newborn.
An unidentified 21-year-old woman showed up at the Grand Crossing police headquarters Friday morning and said she was the baby’s mother, said Chicago police spokesman Thomas Donegan.
Donegan said the woman was questioned and released. Police and DCFS officials said the situation remains under investigation.
