Howard W. McCune, 72, formerly of Elmhurst, a retired group controller with Sears Roebuck and Co., died Saturday, Sept. 8, in his Oak Brook home. Mr. McCune spent 35 years with Sears: 25 years in Chicago and 10 years in New Jersey. He was born in Jefferson, Wis., raised in Wisconsin and received a degree in business from Marquette University. “He was a golfer and helped the Meals on Wheels program by delivering food for 10 years,” said his wife, Kathryn. Mr. McCune served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a gardener, . “He also volunteered at the reading program at St. Pius X Church in Lombard and, while in New Jersey, coached a softball team that our daughters played on,” his wife said. Mr. McCune was a member of Knights of Columbus, Father. McDonald Council, Post No. 1911, a member of Visitation Parish’s choir and sang with the Elmhurst Choral Union. Mr. McCune also is survived by five daughters, Mary Kathryn Brunner, Kathleen Burger, Susan Spahn, Julie Zuelsdorf and Linda Fricano; a son, Dennis; 20 grandchildren; and a cousin, William Beck. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 until services begin at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday in Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 S. York St., Elmhurst. There will be a mass at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Visitation Catholic Church, 779 S. York St., Elmhurst.
