SKOKIE — This is for Steve Johnson and his column of Aug. 30 (“Cubs broadcasters have several strikes against them”). I was wondering why no one had commented on just how bad Joe Carter is as the Cubs’ TV commentator. Thus, your column, in my opinion, was right on target!

Mr. Carter adds nothing to the game but rather detracts with his cliched comments. And I certainly do not want to hear someone who is just a cheerleader like a Ron Santo either. I am over 80 years old and went to my first Cubs game when I was 12. However, after being a devoted fan, I finally gave up on the Cubs when they lost to San Diego in 1984, and now I am happy when they lose. That does not mean, however, that I have given up my right to watch or listen to the broadcasts. It does mean that WGN should know how to choose a color commentator that has some degree of talent rather than bore us with an amateur like a Joe Carter.

A die-hard Cubs fan

EVANSTON — In an article titled “Take Me Out to the Theme Park” in Tempo on Aug. 23, Anne-Marie Kern states, “People go to the Cubs games for the experience . . . the game is not the major focus” in addressing the notion that Wrigley Field is little more than a cavernous beer garden.

She did not say “most of the people” or “many of the people,” so she must include everyone who goes to the game. Then there are no Cubs fans?

There are more “die-hard” Cubs fans that go to Wrigley Field than White Sox fans who go to that “side show” known as Comiskey Park.

A great way to make Wrigley Field more enjoyable would be to get rid of that loud and awful music and make it possible to converse with the person who came to the park with you without having to yell until you are hoarse.
