Ruth M. Dickens, 90, of Englewood, FL, died on Sept. 10, 2001, in Venice, FL. She was born Dec. 18, 1910, in Madison, WI and came to Englewood, FL 30 years ago from Chicago, IL where she was Secretary Treasurer of Dickens Design Group and Ruth Dickens Gallery of Chicago, IL. She was the first woman automoblie race car driver, racing from 1940 until 1953. She was a member of the Sports Car Club of America, Venice Art Gallery and an excellent artist and excellent cook, especially southern dishes. She was only 4’8″ tall. Survived by her son, Robert Lee Dickens, of Livingston, MT.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sidney Dickens, who died in 1997.
