The Senate Judiciary Committee pushed through a slate of new U.S. attorneys Thursday, including two for Pennsylvania, where the fourth hijacked airliner in this week’s terror attacks crashed.

“We need to find people to take charge as soon as possible to prosecute those who have perpetrated these criminal acts against our citizens,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the committee’s ranking Republican.

Among 12 U.S. attorneys, the committee approved by voice vote Patrick Meehan and Mary Beth Buchanan to be U.S. attorneys for the eastern and western districts of Pennsylvania.

The nominations now go to the full Senate.

Committee senators also promised to increase their oversight of the FBI. “That is one of the key agencies when it comes to intelligence gathering in the United States,” said Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). “I think important questions have been raised and will continue to be raised as to whether or not they performed their duties as expected.”
