Howard Wheeler Clement, 84, who as president of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees, worked closely with the late Mayor Richard Daley in founding and developing the Chicago campus of the U. of I., died August 31, 2001 in Leesburg, FL. A nationally known Chicago patent trial attorney, Mr. Clement was appointed by the President’s Commission on the patent system by President Johnson in 1965. He also was appointed to the U.S. Department of Commerce Technical Advisory Board. In addition to serving on the U. of I. Board of Trustees for 12 years (five as president), he served on the Illinois State Board of Higher Education for a number of years. In 1975, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the U. of I. Alumni Association. He was a former president of the Illinois Bar Foundation, the Chicago Patent Lawyers Association, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and a decorated (air medal) veteran of World War II, having served in England as a flying officer with the Eighth Air Force.
