No one should be allowed to use the horrible events of Sept. 11 as an excuse to justify racism against innocent U.S. citizens who happen to have an Arab ethnic background or a Muslim religious faith. By singling out people just because of their ethnic or religious background, we demonstrate a kind of ignorance and intolerance that is squarely opposed to everything the United States stands for.
We all ought to take it upon ourselves to repeat this refrain to everyone we know, so that the intolerant among us are not under the illusion that their sentiments are shared by the majority of the American people.
