With new layoffs announced every day, it seems that techies are about the only group of workers still in demand.

Indeed, a survey of big companies by senior consultant Chris Pickering of the Cutter Consortium in Arlington, Mass., found that Information Technology staffing concerns are “particularly pressing at this time.” Hiring managers identified these as their top problems: Keeping pace with market salaries, recruiting experienced professionals and retaining existing staff.

It won’t surprise people who have asked for raises lately that the most popular ways to solve the problems are 1) going to flexible hours (71 percent of the respondents), 2) offering training on hot technologies (51 percent) and 3) telecommuting (42 percent).

Only 24 percent thought that beating market salaries was the way to solve the staffing problem.
