Just because the fall equinox signals shorter days and colder weather doesn’t mean we shouldn’t celebrate this change of season. Kids and their families can do that at a series of activities at Humboldt Park sponsored by the Chicago Park District. Children can enter a giant balloon that represents the Earth where they will learn about different parts of the planet. They can make their own kite and fly it to discover some things about the wind. The purpose of the events is to let kids discover the importance of taking care of the Earth.
FALL EQUINOX CELEBRATION, noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Humboldt Park. 1400 N. Sacramento Ave., free; 312-742-7549.

Be in the circus
Parents may sometimes think that their lives are like a three-ring circus. Now they can compare their impressions to the real thing at a new exhibit at the Kohl Children’s Museum called “Oops Circus: A Comedy of Errors.” It’s a space where families can discover what it takes to be a circus performer and keep all the plates in the air, so to speak. Youngsters can dress up like a magician, try to juggle balls and scarves, pretend to be a tight-rope walker while they walk from one end of a balance beam to the other and clomp around on stilts. To add to the hullabaloo, a new contraption has been added to the “Music Makers” exhibit. Kids can manipulate a rolling ball to create ever-changing melodies.
“OOPS CIRCUS” AND “MUSIC MAKERS” SCULPTURE, Kohl Children’s Museum, 165 Green Bay Rd., Wilmette, $5; 847-256-6056.
