A bypass project to divert traffic on a western loop around the intersection of Illinois Highways 31 and 62 is being expanded because of state-recommended additions.
The Illinois Department of Transportation will pay for additions to the county project, said Dan Shea, chairman of the McHenry County Board’s Transportation Committee. Shea said the original estimated cost of the project was about $40 million.
New plans for the Algonquin western bypass recommended by IDOT include widening to four lanes from two lanes a stretch of Illinois 31 between the intersection and Rakow Road to the north.
Shea said plans are being changed because of a possible traffic bottleneck once the bypass road is built, in 2004 or 2005.
Expanded plans and new cost estimates for the Algonquin western bypass will be on display from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Crystal Lake Holiday Inn, at Illinois 31 and Three Oaks Road.
