I feel Bob Verdi’s comment implying that he might expect Barry Bonds to complain if some games are not played and he doesn’t get to break the home run record (Tribune, Sept. 16) was an unwarranted, if easy, cheap shot.
I’m not a huge fan of Bonds. I am especially put off every time he stands at home plate admiring one of his homers. But I have heard him interviewed more than once, and when he repeatedly says that the home run chase is not as important to him as it is to everyone else–not nearly as important as helping his team get to the playoffs–I for one believe him. He has given me no reason to believe otherwise.
I’m starting to understand why Bonds is wary of the press. If they like you, you can do nothing wrong. If they don’t like you, anything goes.
