Notre Dame coach Bob Davie accepts “full responsibility” for the team’s wretched performance against Nebraska on Sept. 8. Big deal. He did the same thing when the team was slaughtered by Oregon State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Davie just doesn’t get it. We’re not interested in his martyr-type apologies or his whining about a merciless schedule. This is Notre Dame football. Davie is in over his head. The job is much too big for him, and he’s not getting the sympathy of the Irish followers. No one is shedding tears on his behalf, especially the old Domers whose memory goes back to Rockne, Leahy and Parseghian. Those coaches possessed the true spirit of Notre Dame and created the mystique that made the “victory march” a reality.
