Anna Hobbs, 83, of Streamwood and formerly of Schaumburg and Chicago, a retired factory worker, died of a stroke Monday, Sept. 24, in St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. Born and raised in Chicago, Mrs. Hobbs married at a young age. To support her four children, she went to work on the assembly line of the Stanadyne Screw Co. in Chicago and Maywood. She worked on the line from the late 1930s until about 1980. “Everyone said she could never raise four children, but she was determined to do right and take care of us,” said her daughter LaVerne Friedley Alcala. After retiring, Mrs. Hobbs volunteered as a lunch mom at Einstein School in Hanover Park. After undergoing triple-bypass heart surgery in Alexian Brothers Medical Center a few years ago, she started counseling incoming bypass patients. And as a member of St. Marcelline Catholic Church in Schaumburg, she taught religious education to children with Down syndrome and helped with fundraising. “She was the kind of woman who made friends with everybody, and when she walked into a room, there was always a smile on her face. She would get everybody laughing,” her daughter said. Mrs. Hobbs is also survived by three more daughters, Helen Keefe Orawiec, Judy Johnston Bream and Florence Gasteier; a brother, Edward Zaremba; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. Thursday in Countryside Funeral Home, 1640 Greenmeadows Blvd., Streamwood, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Marcelline Church, 822 S. Springinsguth Rd., Schaumburg.
