In the wake of this national tragedy, I’ve been reading with even greater interest the numerous letters in Voice of the people. I’ve been heartened by the outpouring of grief and inspired by the many words of patriotism.

That’s why I am extremely disappointed by the letter submitted by Paul Johnson (“Missing in action,” Sept. 21). I can’t believe the inflammatory remark he made against fellow Americans who happen to be flag burners, atheists, civil libertarians or separation-of-church-and-state zealots. According to Johnson, members of these groups have nothing to give in the way of healing, consolation and charity.

Shame on Mr. Johnson for writing such an offensive and divisive letter, and even bigger shame on the Tribune editors for publishing his letter at a time like this.
