As a Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism graduate, Class of ’48, it pains me to see such simplistic and wrong analysis by one of its instructors, Marda Dunsky.
Let us be absolutely clear: Just as we need to bear in mind that the Sept. 11 attacks are not about Islam (to the contrary, it is the perversion of a noble religion by fanatics), we must also see that it is not about Israel, as much as Dunsky wishes it were.
Although Israel may loom large in the demonology of the terrorists, the cold-blooded attacks were about America, indeed Western way of life–our values, our modernity, our liberalism and our courage to stand up to those who challenge a peaceful world order and democratic values.
In the name of misguided political and religious totalitarianism, the United States becomes the pre-eminent target and terrorism the weapon of choice.
