The term “lovable losers” has been misused, overused and abused. It is often used to reference the ballplayers known as the Chicago Cubs. This is incorrect. Professionals paid a minimum of more than a million dollars a year who cannot perform the job they were hired to do are not lovable losers. They are overpaid incompetents.

If we had a similar work record, we would be fired.

“Lovable losers” describes the lifelong, dedicated, diehard, Cubs fans. We begin every spring with unreasonable hope only to see it crushed at some point during the season. Then we keep saying, “Wait until next year.”

Why do we do it? It’s a sickness without cure. But we do have a beautiful park in a great neighborhood in a wonderful city. The closest I’ve been to heaven on Earth is a Friday afternoon in the bleachers. Sun, friends and an exciting game.
