Amid the death and rubble of the Sept. 11 terror attack, a moral clarity has emerged regarding the obvious evil confronting our nation. Yet like those crime victims who ask what they did to prompt the assault on themselves, a few Americans are instead focusing on what America did to “provoke” the terror. Hence, Marda Dunsky asks, “Why did this happen?” and eagerly awaits the results of this “difficult task of national introspection.”
Her question, and especially her answers–America’s alliance with Israel and the fantasy that the terrorists are simply seeking the same rights we claim proudly as Americans–turn reality on its head.
America’s bond with her democratic and strategic partner Israel is indeed part of what the terrorists seek to destroy. But it is not because the terrorists want American-style freedoms: their idealized society is a theocratic totalitarianism, the very antithesis of individual liberty.
America, Israel and their alliance are bulwarks against the terrorists’ deadly and evil campaign.
