Charles “Wash” Washington, as he was known to his friends, died Saturday, September 22, 2001, in his Hyde Park home. Born and raised in Huntington, West Virginia, he moved to Chicago in 1947 after his marriage to Sadie M. Brooks in 1945 to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology. ‘Wash’ was one of a small group of African American Licensed Electrical Engineers in his day and retired from the Chicago Housing Authority. He is survived by his wife Sadie; his three children, Charles Jr., Robert, and Karen along with his nine grandchildren; his brother Robert. Visitation is Friday, September 28, 2001 from 6-8 p.m. including an Alpha Phi Alpha Omega Service at 6:30 p.m. at A.A. Rayner & Sons Funeral Home, on 71st and Calumet Ave. The family and friends will celebrate his life at Trinity United Church of Christ, 400 W. 95th St. on Saturday, September 29, 2001 beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will follow services at Oakwoods Cemetery.
