Government prosecutors and Microsoft lawyers told a federal judge Friday that they’ve failed to reach a settlement in their antitrust dispute after two weeks of negotiations, sources familiar with the discussions said.

Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly had given the parties until Friday to produce a settlement, or said she would appoint a mediator. She held a conference call with the parties but made no announcements Friday, and it’s unclear when she may name a mediator. All parties declined to comment, but sources close to the situation said large differences remain.

Neither side is optimistic that a mediator will make much of a difference.
