In response to the infectious “how dare they” rhetoric featured so prominently in the Oct. 13 Voice of the people and in so many public discussions of the Sept. 11 events, I ask: How dare we, the U.S., presume to be immune to or somehow above reproach, recrimination or attack? These recklessly self-important presumptions propel the terrorists’ motivation for changing our lives forever. Everything has a price, including arrogance and especially arrogance plastered with blind nationalism.

With regard to our sense of superiority, the chickens have come home to roost.
