What’s wrong with this picture? Illinois, our flagship state school, wallops Indiana 35-14 to go to 5-1 and second place in the Big Ten. This is Page 10 news (Tribune, Oct. 14). Meanwhile, Notre Dame, which isn’t even from our state, beats West Virginia 34-24 to go to 2-3, and this is front-page news.
Considering the lack of support from the state’s largest newspaper, it is surprising the Fighting Illini are as good as they are. They’d be a perennial football powerhouse if they were accorded the publicity that most of the other Big Ten schools receive from the big papers in their states.
