After the U.S. women’s hockey team beat Canada 4-1 Saturday in the first pre-Olympic matchup of these archrivals, USA Hockey announced its had canceled the team’s trip to the Finlandia Cup tournament Nov. 3-10 in Finland over fears about travel disruption.
“For me, it wasn’t a safety issue,” said Sarah Tueting of Winnetka, Saturday’s winning goalie. “It was a great decision because of team unity. Some people on the team are not as far along in healing after Sept. 11 as others.”
Forward Kathleen Knauth, lost her father, Don, in the World Trade Center collapse. Don J. Knauth, 51, was a bank analyst for Keefe, Bruyette & Woods Inc.
The team attended his memorial service Sept. 22 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Knauth, 22, rejoined Team USA at its training camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., the next day.
