We keep hearing “America must return to normal.” I think not. In case you were not paying attention, America was not doing so well prior to Sept. 11–or since. Peace and prosperity seem to be reserved for a select few. Children are going to bed hungry; the numbers of homeless single mothers and homeless working families are on the rise; racial profiling is an everyday occurrence, as is legal discrimination based on sexual orientation. The lack of a national health-care policy is literally killing people. Our educational system is failing too many of our children.

Hate, greed, intolerance and ignorance are too much a part of “normal America.” We must not return to that.

We must change as individuals, our politicians must change, our policies must change and our attitudes must change.
