A study by technology consultant Cutter Consortium has knocked holes in the myth of the wildly successful dot-com workshop whose brilliant staff joyfully puts in tons of hours and produces top-notch work.

The reality, according to the Arlington, Mass.-based outfit, is that companies with salaried software developers working more than 10 hours a week of “voluntary ” overtime suffer lower morale, higher turnover, lower productivity and less customer satisfaction.

Thirty percent of companies whose developers worked more than 10 hours of unpaid overtime a week reported negative morale, versus 9 percent for companies with lower OT averages.

“People who feel overworked also feel used,” the report said.
