Halloween is here, and that means the holiday season has begun. We refer not to stores prematurely dragging out the tinsel, but holiday bakers starting to plan their 2001 lineup. Which is no doubt why Martha Stewart’s special issue, “Holiday Cookies,” has just hit the stands.

We like the thorough technique primers, the first-rate photos, and, yes, the recipes, from familiar (shortbread, gingerbread) to adventurous (dulce de leche sandwich cookies, chocolate-piped peanut butter cookies). Cookie crafts (tree ornaments, gift tags, etc.) add another dimension. At $5.95, it’s a cookie book in magazine format, making it a bargain in our eyes.
