Students from the Northwestern University Film Society have begun a new series called Block Cinema, which will screen classic and contemporary films three nights a week in the Block Museum of Art.

Works shown on Thursdays will illustrate the theme “Foreign Exhange: 1990s International Cinema.” Those on Fridays will showcase “Post-War European Cinema of the Fantastic.” Those on Saturdays are called “Sonic Visions” because they explore the innovative ways music is used in movies.

The schedule includes “The Saragossa Manuscript,” a 1964 Polish film by Wojciech J. Has, 8 p.m. Friday; “Califone,” films in conjunction with live music by Chicago group Califone, 8 p.m. Saturday; “A Moment of Innocence,” 1996 Iranian film by Moshen Makhmalbaf, 9 p.m. Thursday; “Fahrenheit 451” directed by Francois Truffaut at 8 p.m. Nov. 9; “Wave Twisters,” described as a “hip-hop-meets-Hanna Barbera animated science-fiction adventure,” 8 and 10 p.m. Nov. 10; and “Close-Up” a 1990 Iranian film by Abbas Kiarostami, 8 p.m. Nov. 15.

Films will be shown at the Block Museum of Art, 1967 S. Campus Drive, Northwestern University, Evanston. The series runs through Dec. 1 (except for Nov. 22-25); 847-491-4000.
