The American Academy of Pediatrics has asked the federal government to ban airlines from allowing children younger than 2 to sit on their parents’ laps. The academy’s proposal would require rear-facing, aircraft-approved safety seats for infants and children weighing less than 20 pounds, and forward-facing seats for those 20 to 40 pounds. Many automobile safety seats are approved for aircraft use, the academy says, but parents should check the label.
