Former National League President Leonard Coleman is the first black appointed to Churchill Downs’ board of directors.
Thomas Meeker, Churchill’s president and chief executive, said adding diversity to the board was important. He said Coleman would try to help racing draw younger fans.
Coleman, a regular at New Jersey’s Monmouth Park, owns a 2-year-old named Crimson Paradise.
“Between that and my professional sports and marketing experience, it was perceived as a good match,” Coleman said. “Hopefully I’ll have a contribution to make.”
Among Churchill’s holdings is Arlington Park.
Mas for Duran
Roberto Duran is back home in Panama after a serious car accident in Argentina.
“It was really pretty rough,” the 50-year-old boxing great said. “I cried in pain.”
The four-time champion was left with a collapsed lung and several broken ribs when the car he was riding in crashed on a Buenos Aires highway Oct. 4.
As for the future: “Boxing is my life, but right now I don’t want to think about it.”
Say what?
`Publicity is just like poison. It’s OK as long as you don’t swallow it.’
–Former Cleveland Browns coach Sam Rutigliano.
