CEOs of the nation’s airlines didn’t have much trouble getting Congress to approve billions of dollars in corporate bailouts after Sept. 11, but it’s not so easy as you get farther down the food chain.

The AFL-CIO is spending $1 million for an ad campaign to push for measures, such as unemployment-benefits extension and subsidization of health insurance for idled workers, to be included in the economic-stimulus package. The spots, running now in 10 states, feature a woman sitting with her child in her kitchen and worrying about the future after being laid off.
