Sept. 11 was an indescribable tragedy, worthy of the lavish charitable outpouring to the victims’ relatives.

But during this holiday season, we must not forget those in need among us. Federal and state governments are reallocating resources because of the recession. Donors who diverted gifts to New York have left local charities high and dry. The safety net is frayed.

We need to rededicate ourselves to charitable contributions of time or money. If not, terrorism’s next breeding ground may well be America herself.
