In response to “Life lessons” (Voice of the people, Jan. 1), Tammy Meinershagen is correct on most of her points except for her last statement: “What little outward pain is inflicted on your back from the heavy load of books is well worth the investment into molding your character.”

It’s not the amount of homework that is the problem; it’s the weight of the books. Scoliosis and back pain aren’t the price to pay for academic advancement.
