Your editorial titled “A long wait for home” was superb. It dramatically but factually describes how Illinois lags behind almost all other states in developing a strong community-based system of group homes for persons with developmental disabilities.
Illinois now has the opportunity to begin moving in the right direction. Gov. George Ryan has taken the right move in downsizing the Lincoln Developmental Center, the oldest institution in our state. Hopefully, he will close LDC altogether and use the millions saved to invest in the community system of care that is so desperately needed by our citizens with disabilities.
