Leonard M. “Len” Winans, 66, of Kewanee, died 1:05 a.m., Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 at his home. Born May 29, 1935 in Kewanee, IL, the son of J. Lester and Ruth E. Winans, nee Milnes. He graduated from Toulon High School and the University of Illinois. He was a guidance counselor and tennis coach for Niles Twp. School District for 30 years, retiring in 1990. He married Barb Mercer, March 19, 1955 in Osceola, IL. She survives along with one daughter, Mrs. Pamela (John) Lodal of Boise, ID; two sons, David (Nancy) Winans of Glenview, IL and Mark (Christin) Winans of Clifton, VA; seven grandchildren, Colleen, Tim, Alex, Geoff, Jessica, Christopher and Nicholas; one brother, Jack (Elaine) Winans of Chicago, IL; preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Michael L. Winans in 1984. He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Hawaii. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kewanee and before moving to Kewanee, the Central Methodist Church, Skokie, IL. He sang in both church choirs. He was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. He enjoyed hiking and had hiked the Appalachian Trail. He enjoyed fishing. He was a Blue Coat Volunteer at Kewanee Hospital and also a volunteer for the Kewanee Hospice. He was a member of Us-2. In Skokie he was active with the local Boy Scout group. He was a member of the Kewanee Kiwanis Club. As a cancer survivor, he was active in the Kewanee Chapter American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 at Central Methodist Church in Skokie. Rev. Robert Burkhart will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, IL, 309-852-2600, and also one hour prior to services at the church in Skokie. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Kewanee Hospital Hospice.
