Don Wycliff’s column was a thoughtful and sobering reflection on the lack of a constructive U.S. foreign policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. President Bush has chosen to give Prime Minister Ariel Sharon a green light to use any and all means to suppress armed Palestinian resistance. In doing so, he has confused terrorism with a legitimate struggle for national liberation.
It is to Wycliff’s credit that he understands the distinction and the need to deal with the root issue: namely, the necessity of ending the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem and allowing a free, democratic and territorially viable Palestinian state to come into existence.
