I think your decision to bring gubernatorial candidates together for debate in front of your editorial board is brilliant. “In Their Own Words” (Commentary, Jan. 30) will be extremely helpful to readers who want to do some comparison shopping in this important race.

Illinois Atty. Gen. Jim Ryan’s non-answer to your question of whether he would deny poor women, in poor health, state-funded abortions was classic poli-talk. The fact that you tried to force him to answer the question was great. That he did not is typical.

He did say something very interesting though: “You’re going to one of my personal moral views.” Yes, that is right. It is personal, as in private. Why should we have to have his personal morality forced on our private lives? The state can’t pick and choose what health care services to offer and when. Furthermore, since when is it moral to deny a poor person whose health is in jeopardy a legal medical procedure?

Thanks for covering these races in a meaningful and helpful manner.
