John E. Mack Jr., 80, of Sun City Huntley, former president of Mack Brothers Co., an appliance and sporting goods store in Chicago, died of heart failure Saturday, Feb. 2, in his home. Born in Chicago, Mr. Mack was raised in Oak Park and graduated from Oak Park High School. In the Navy during World War II, Mr. Mack was a radar operator aboard the destroyer USS Welles, participating in 12 battles in the Pacific. After the military, Mr. Mack went to work in the family business, Mack Brothers, then owned by his father, John E. Sr. By the 1950s Mr. Mack struck out on his own and became co-owner of Toy Shoppers Service, a toy distribution company in Chicago. A former resident of Barrington, Mr. Mack also owned Dicor Glow, a supplier of table lamps during the 1960s. By the late 1970s, he returned to Mack Brothers, retired and closed the store in the early 1980s. “He was one of the kindest men you would ever know,” said his wife, Mary Ellen. Mr. Mack is also survived by three daughters, Kathleen Priester, Nancy Roxworthy and Janice Martin; three sons, John E. III, Thomas and Timothy; a sister, Evelyn Rundblad; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in O’Connor Funeral Home, 11603 E. Main St., Huntley. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 13707 Dundee Rd., Huntley.
