Peter Garastik, 76, of Batavia, a veteran of World War II and a 30-year member of the Naval Reserve, died of complications from emphysema in Delnor-Community Hospital, Geneva, on Sunday, Feb. 3. Mr. Garastik was born in Hammond. After graduating from Hammond High School, he was drafted in 1943. Upon his discharge in 1946, he went back to Indiana, where he married Joan Skorupa. In addition to working full time, Mr. Garastik joined the Naval Reserve and achieved the rate of chief petty officer. He and his wife moved to Chicago and lived at the same location for 42 years before moving to Batavia seven years ago. He was employed by Standard Oil, Sunshine Biscuit Co. and Pettibone Mulliken Corp. Although Mr. Garastik loved to fish, read and listen to music, his family said his favorite hobby was baking bread. “On Sundays he would be in the kitchen making bread, and I would be on the couch watching football. Every holiday he would be the one to make and bring the bread,” his wife said. Other survivors include a daughter, Ginny Westfall; two sisters Sylvia Shendrick and Loretta Jones; a brother, Eugenie; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Yurs-Peterson-Moss Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2300 Main St., Batavia.
